1,What Is an Electric Gate Valve?

The valve stem connects the actuator to the gate and transfers the actuator's mechanical force to the valve.

For electric gate valves, the stem may be subjected to both rotational forces and significant axial thrust. Therefore, stem diameter, thread design, material, mechanical strength, and friction characteristics are important factors when selecting the actuator.

3,How Does an Electric Gate Valve Work?

When the control system sends an OPEN signal, the actuator motor starts running. The motor drives a reduction gearbox, which reduces the rotational speed while increasing the output torque.

The gearbox drives the valve stem. Because the stem has a threaded mechanism, rotary movement is converted into linear movement. The stem then lifts the gate upward until the valve reaches the fully open position.

When a CLOSE signal is received, the motor rotates in the opposite direction. The stem moves downward and pushes the gate toward the valve seat until the valve is fully closed.

In an automated control system, limit switches can detect the fully open and fully closed positions, while torque protection can protect the valve and actuator if the valve becomes jammed.

4,Key Parameters for Electric Gate Valve Actuator Selection

1. Torque

2. Thrust

5,Common Control Methods

Electric gate valves can be controlled in several ways:

Local Control

The operator controls the valve using local push buttons or switches.

Remote Control

The actuator is controlled remotely through a control cabinet, PLC, DCS, or another automation system.

Digital Control

Digital inputs and outputs can be used for valve operation and status indication.

Analog Control

Modulating actuators can use:

4–20 mA

for position commands or feedback.

Fieldbus Control

Advanced intelligent actuators may support industrial communication protocols such as:

Modbus RTU, Profibus, and Foundation Fieldbus.
